Signs of Poor HVAC Airflow

How do you know if your HVAC system is struggling? Airflow issues are often subtle before they become catastrophic. Here are the red flags that suggest your home has HVAC airflow & comfort issues:

Weak Vent Pressure

If you hold your hand up to a register and feel a faint whisper instead of a steady stream of air, your blower motor or ductwork is struggling.

Hot and Cold Spots

This is a major sign of poor air distribution. If the temperature fluctuates significantly as you walk from the kitchen to the hallway, the air isn’t circulating effectively.

Unusual Noises

Any whistling sounds can be a sign of air escaping or the fan struggling. This is a definite sign you have an airflow problem.

Sky-High Energy Bills

When air doesn’t flow correctly, your system has to run longer cycles to reach the thermostat’s set point, draining your wallet in the process.

Frequent Cycling

Does your AC turn on and off every few minutes? This “short-cycling” often points to a system that is choking on its own air supply or overheating.

Excessive Dust

If you’re dusting your coffee table every two days, it’s likely that air isn’t being pulled through the filtration system properly. You may also have leaks in your return ducts.

Strange Odors

Musty smells can be a sign of mold within the ductwork. Burning smells indicate electrical problems.

Any of these signs could mean it’s time to call a professional so they can determine what is going on with your system.

Causes of Uneven Cooling or Heating

If you have uneven cooling or heating in your home, it can be for many different reasons. Here are three major things that could be happening:

1. Solar Gain and Insulation

Some rooms of your home can take a brutal beating from the sun. If your insulation is aging or insufficient, you may be having issues. Your HVAC system may be perfectly functional. It may simply be unable to keep up with the heat entering through the walls and windows.

2. Blocked or Dirty Coils

Your AC’s evaporator coil lives inside your indoor unit. Over time, it can become caked with dust. This buildup acts as an insulator. It prevents the refrigerant from absorbing heat and physically blocking the air from passing through.

3. Oversized or Undersized Units

Bigger isn’t always better. An oversized unit will cool the air so fast that it shuts off before it has a chance to dehumidify the home or circulate air to the furthest rooms. On the flip side, an undersized unit will simply run forever without ever reaching the goal temperature.

Ductwork & System Imbalances

Ductwork & system imbalances are perhaps the most frequent culprits behind comfort complaints.

  • Leaky Ducts: The Department of Energy estimates that the average home loses 20% to 30% of its air through holes and poor connections in the ductwork. In Dallas, these ducts are often in scorching hot attics. A leak doesn’t just let cool air out, it pulls extremely hot attic air in.
  • Restricted Returns: Your system needs to breathe in as much air as it breathes out. If your return vents are blocked by furniture or are too small for the system’s capacity, the supply airflow will drop significantly.
  • Crushed or Kinked Flex Ducts: Many homes have flexible ducting. If a technician or a homeowner moving holiday decorations accidentally steps on or displaces a duct, it can kink like a garden hose. This cuts off air to an entire room.

How We Diagnose HVAC Airflow & Comfort Issues

Fixing HVAC airflow & comfort issues requires precision testing to get to the root of the problem. When our technicians arrive at your home, we will use several methods, including:

  1. Static Pressure Testing: We measure your HVAC system’s pressure. High static pressure tells us the air is meeting too much resistance. This is usually due to undersized ducts or a clogged filter.
  2. Thermal Imaging: Using infrared cameras, we can see exactly where heat is leaking into your home or where cool air is escaping behind walls.
  3. Anemometer Readings: We use digital tools to measure the exact Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) of air coming out of each vent. This tool helps to identify specific imbalances and where air flow needs to improve.
  4. Duct Inspections: We physically (and sometimes via remote camera) inspect the duct runs in your attic or crawlspace. We look for disconnections, fallen insulation, or pests that may have caused damage.

You can trust Integrity Air Conditioning & Heating to conduct the proper testing to determine if there is an HVAC airflow problem. If there is, we will diagnose the issue and make the best recommendations for repair.
