History of Veteran Day

The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, marking the official end of World War I. But it was the armistice date of November 11, 1918, that remained in the public imagination as the date that marked the end of the war.

One year later, in November 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The day’s observation included parades and public gatherings, as well as a brief pause in business and school activities at 11 a.m.

Armistice Day Becomes Veterans Day

The WWI armistice (cease of fighting) went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, was regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

The Origins of the Poppy as a Veteran Remembrance

In the United States, Americans don’t typically wear poppies on November 11 (Veterans Day), which honors all living veterans.

In the U.S. poppies are worn on Memorial Day – the last Monday in May – to commemorate the sacrifice of the many men and women who have given their lives fighting for their country.

How Poppies Became Associated with WWI Healing and Renewal

Poppies are ‘birthed’ when seeds in the soil are disturbed, aerated and allowed to bloom.

Across northern France and Flanders (northern Belgium), the brutal clashes between Allied and Axis soldiers tore up fields and forests, destroying trees and plants and wreaking havoc on the soil beneath. But in the warm early spring of 1915, bright red flowers began peeking through the battle-scarred land. The red petals of the poppy became symbolic of the blood of the fallen soldiers.

From 1914 to 1918, World War I took a greater human toll than any previous conflict, with some 8.5 million soldiers dead of battlefield injuries or disease. The Great War, as it was then known, also ravaged the landscape of Western Europe, where most of the fiercest fighting took place. From the devastated battlefields – red poppies covered the landscape with new life.
