In the past few years, Dallas has had the blessings of relatively cool summers (notice we said ‘relatively‘!). In 2018: no more cool Texas summer! Temperatures continue to climb in Dallas. This weekend, high temps of 109+ are expected.
The Dallas heat wave puts a strain on air conditioners. Let’s examine how to save money and decrease the risk of an a/c breakdown!

10 Dallas AC Tips to Avoid A/C Breakdown and Save Money in Extreme Heat
- Change the A/C Filter! Many a/c users never think to change the a/c filter. Attempting to push large volumes of air through an area blocked by a totally clogged a/c filter uses more energy – and costs more money to run! Worst Case: The resulting strain on the a/c system could cause a breakdown in extreme heat.
- Clear away debris from the outdoor part of the unit (a/c condenser coil). Dirt, grass clippings, leaves and cottonwood seed fluff can completely block the outdoor a/c condenser. An a/c unit with totally clogged condenser coils uses more energy – and costs more money to run! Also, an a/c with a dirty condenser loses some of its ability to provide cool air. Or it may take much longer to achieve the desired level of cooling. Worst Case: The resulting strain on the a/c system could cause a breakdown in extreme heat.
- Set the a/c thermostat to 78 degrees or warmer during the day. Yesterday, Ambit Energy was advising customers to reduce energy use between 3pm and 7pm. This reduces stress on your a/c, saves money on energy – and reduces the demand on DFW area power grids.
- Use ceiling fans or pedestal standing fans; or both. No matter how good the a/c – extreme heat challenges indoor cooling. Keep the thermostat set at temperatures 10-15% above optimal for at least eight hours per day – and use fans. You will stay cooler, reduce the strain on your a/c – and save money on energy costs.
- Keep the a/c thermostat at a steady temperature during the day; 76 to 78 degrees indoors is a starting point. Some think that turning the a/c completely off during the day saves money on energy bills. It does not. When turned off all day – the a/c has to work so hard to cool down a totally hot space that it actually uses more energy! And, you (and your house!) are hot for hours. Turn down the a/c thermostat a few degrees at night. You will sleep better – and the a/c has to work less to cool your home during evening hours.
- Close doors and vents in unused spaces: don’t cool what you don’t use.
- Install shade or thermal curtains on sunny side windows of home or office; this also includes doors with glass panels. Thermal insulating, energy-efficient curtains are available at reasonable prices at Walmart.com, BigLots.com, Amazon.com and more.
- Do not use the oven for indoor cooking during heat of the day (just like the early pioneers!). Also, do not run indoor clothes dryers during the heat of the day; or the dishwasher – or any appliance that generates heat.
- Choose AC Tune Ups and Maintenance – rather than funding an a/c breakdown. Modern air conditioners are high performance equipment. Would you run a car 100,000 miles with no oil change or maintenance? Maintain your air conditioner!
